Niujie Mosque Introduction

Niujie Libai Temple was built in Song and Liao Dynasties. It was renamed in the tenth of Chenghua (A.D. 1474 year) of Ming Dynasty as “Libai Temple”. It lies in an Islamic quarter in the southwest of the city, about 2km/1mi to the west of the Temple of Heaven. It was built by two Arabs in 995. Throughout the three periods Yuan, Ming and Qing (13th-19th C), it underwent several alterations. Since 1949 it has been repeatedly restored. o­n this site of at least 6000 sq.m/7176 sq.yd there are several buildings: the prayer hall, the Bangge Lou (minaret), a six-cornered moon observatory tower the Wangyue Lou, and two pavilions with numerous steles, where Chinese and Arabic inscriptions are engraved. The buildings of tiles and wood correspond externally to the classic Chinese style, whereas their interiors are Arab.

Niujie Mosque Features

The temple covers about 6,000 square meters. Its architectural layout is a typical combination of ancient Chinese palaces with mosques of the Arab style. Temple worship area covered more than 600 square meters, which can accommodate 1,000 worshiping people. The inside of the temple is shining and solemn with a sense of elegance. In the right east direction of the temple, there is a so called “Xuanlilou” or “Bangkelou”, which was built for the purpose to appeal Muslims around to worship in the temple. There are two temples, “Shaykh graves”. “Shaykh” is a transliteration of the Arabic, a call for religious scholar of high moral. The two graves are buried two Arab Presbyterian missionary, who came to China from long distant land and died here. Niujie Libai Temple is not o­nly a well-known temple in Beijing but outside. Many Arab countries friends are proud to come here to worship
