Anhui Introduction

Located in the eastern part of China and crosses over the basins of Yangtze and Huai River. It is the geographical transitional area of the intersection between north and south China. It is about 300 kms from East China Sea and subjects to the inner-land coastal area. It neighbors with Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei and Shandong, etc.
As early as Xia Dynasty, Dayu allied in present Tu Mountain, Huaiyuan, and Anhui was regulated to divisionally belong to Yangzhou, Xuzhou and Yuzhou in nine states. During the spring and autumn period, most of kingdoms in Anhui were amalgamated by Wu and Chu sooner or later. Thus, Anhui was historically called "Wu's head and Chu's feet". In B.C.333, Chu destroyed Wu and the whole Anhui territory fell into the hands of Chu.
In the Tang Dynasty, China was divided into ten avenues in which Anhui individually belonged to Henan Avenue, Huainan Avenue and Jiangnan Avenue. In Northern Song period, Anhui belonged to Jiangnan East Road, Huainan East Road, Huainan West Road and Jingxi North Road.
In Yuan Dynasty, the provincial system that was inherited until today was created, and Anhui belonged divisionally to central Book Province of China as well as Henan Province and Jiangzhe Province.
In Ming Dynasty, the Chief Secretary took the place of the province of Yuan and Anhui was categorized to Nanzhili. As it came to Qing, province substituted the Chief Secretary in Ming and changed Nanzhilli to Jiangnan province.
In the sixth year of Kangxi (1667), Jiangnan province was divided into halves to set up Jiangsu and Anhui provinces. Anhui gained the name by the combination of the initial names of Anqin and Huizhou. It was the start when Anhui officially was set up as a province. Owing to the Wan Mountain and Wan Water within the boundary and as well as the country of Wan during The Spring and Autumn period, Anhui got the short name "Wan". In the 25th year of Qianlong (1760), the capital was officially set up in Huaining, the administrative center of Anqin (the present Anqin city). In the early stage of the Republic of China, the capital of Anhui was still regulated in Anqin. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the national government transferred the capital into Hefei.
