Foshan Introduction

Located in central south of Guangdong Province and in the hinterland of Pearl River Delta, adjacent to Guangzhou to the east and Hong Kong and Macao to the south, it is the core city in PRD, where the economy is most developed in China. With warm climate and affluent rainfall, spring-like weather exists all the year round in Foshan. As a result, it has long been a land of abundance since the ancient times. Xijiang River and Beijiang River, part of the Pearl River System---one of the three largest valleys in China run through its territory. Currently, Foshan has covered five Districts: Chancheng, Nanhai, Shunde, Gaoming and Sanshui, with the total area of 3848.49 km2, and the population of 5.8583 million. Foshan is known as hometown of overseas Chinese. It is also the hometown for 1.48 million Overseas Chinese in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other countries and regions. Among them, overseas Chinese from Hong Kong and Macao are up to 0.8 million.
The city got its name Foshan soon afterwards. During the years of Tang-Song Dynasty handicraft, trade and culture developed at such great speed that merchants from all over the country came to Foshan. It became so prosperous that together with Hankou town in Hubei Province, Jingde town in Jingxi Province, and Zhuxian town in Henan Province it became o­ne of the Four Noted Towns of China. As the largest trade center for the gathering and delivering of goods, it was together Beijing, Suzhou and Hankou named as o­ne of the o­ne of the Four Essential Cities in China. Even today it enjoys great reputation with the likes of Guang Gauze Downtown, South China Pottery Plaza, and the Place of Origin for Southern China' Medicinal Herbs, being known all over the word.

By air
Currently, there is no aviation passenger depot in Foshan. So, if you intend to go out by air, you need to go to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport. Everyday, there are many trains from Foshan to Guangzhou. So it is quite convenient for you to get to Guangzhou by train. You can also take the coach heading for Guangzhou at the coach station in Foshan City.
At present, the special coach service connecting Foshan with Guangzhou New Baiyun Airport has begun operations. You can take the special coach at Hongyun Coach Station of Foshan. The coach set off from Foshan every 30 minutes from 5:00 in the morning to 21:00 at night. The coach set off from New Baiyun Airport every 30 minutes too, from 6:30 in the morning to 22:30 at night. The whole journey takes you o­ne hour and the carfare is 28 Yuan.

By Railway
Foshan Railway Station is located o­n North Wenchang Road. It enjoys convenient transportation as No.1, No.2, No.4, No.5, No.6, No.8, No.9 and No.10 buses will take you there. The rail line linking Guangzhou with Zhanjiang runs through the city and connects Foshan to the nation railway network. In Foshan Railway Station, there are a lot of trains bounding for almost every city around China.

There are four major long-distance passenger depots in the urban area of Foshan. They are Hongyun Coach Station of Foshan, Zumiao Coach Station, Dongfang Plaza Coach Station and Chengbei Coach Station.

Foshan Festivals

Spring festival: the first day of lunar new year." open the door" with firecrackers at dawn, men prepare sugar soup and changshou noodles for women. In the past time the portrait of ancestor would be hung up in the major room and the householder worship the ancestor, the younger generation hand in eggs and tea respectfully to the superior. There is also the custom in Fenshui area to invite relatives to feast. The floor are not to be swept and no knife or needles or something else with a sharp blade to be used. And then pay a New Year call the next day.

Dragon boat festival: also called "Duanwu festival". In the past days people decorate the door with herbal leaves, and smoke inside the house by burning herbs. Spread limes along side the wall and sometimes hung portrait of "zhongkui” to scare ghosts away, or stick charms o­n the door. o­n the day with no exception people eat rice dumpling and "five Guan"(yellow-fin tuna, yellow eel, vitellin, cucumber and king’s yellow liquor), in addition they boil meat with garlic. Children wear aroma bag, eat king’s yellow horse bean and smear king’s yellow o­n their foreheads. Doctors collect herbs for standby o­n the day. Before the day of the festival, grandmothers give their grandsons fans, bellybands, aroma bags and tiger headed shoes etc.
