Fujian Introduction

Fujian province, also called Min for short, situates o­n the southeast China coast. It has a land area of 121.400 square kilometers. It faces Taiwan province to the east across the Taiwan Straits, borders Guangdong province o­n the southwest , connects Zhejiang province o­n the northeast, adjoins Jiangxi province o­n the northwestand is not far from Hong Kong and Macao. The famous WuYi mountain is across the northwest of Fujian province. Fujian belongs to the East China, it is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. More than eight million overseas Chinese and foreign citizens of Chinese origin come from Fujian. Eighty percent of those now living in Taiwan have their ancestral homes in the province. Fujian is the traffic artery between the East sea and South sea of China, it is the nearst province in China to Southeast Asia, West Asia, East Africa and Oceania.
The major cities in Fujian are Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Xiameng, Zhangzhou,Nanping, Longyan,Fuding, Yongan and so o­n. And Fuzhou is the capital city of Fujian.
Fujian has a sub-tropical climate, warm and humid. There is distinct difference in climate between north and south, coastal and inland regions, and valleys and mountains. It has an annual temperature of 17~­21C and an annual precipitation of 1,100-2,000 mm, both increasing from northwest to southeast. Typhoons occur frequently from July to September.
Fujian's food grain includes mainly rice, sweet potatoes and wheat, and cash crops mainly sugar-cane, peanuts, rapeseed and tobacco. Fujian is o­ne of China's major sugar-cane and tea growers. The Wuyi Mountain Area is famous for its tea. Tangerines, Longans, lichees, bananas, loquats and pineapples are the major fruit of Fujian. Aquaculture is developed along the coast. Tong'an Conty is famous for its lancelets, a rare species of fish, and Pingtan for its laver, a sea vegetable.
Fujian is rich in coal, iron, tungsten, copper, molybdenum, lead, zinc and rare earth. Shoushan is known for its stone carving, Fuzhou for its bodiless lacquerware and Dehua for its procelain.
Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, three principal religions in the world, have a considerable influence in Fujian. Of the 142 major Buddhist temples in China, 14 are in Fujian. The Qingjing Mosque in the city of Quanzhou is o­ne of the earliest Muslim structures in the country. Minju, Liuyuan, and Puxian operas; Quanzhang puppet show; and Nanyin music have a certain influence in China. Fujian is the native place of Zhu Xi, a renowned philosopher of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), who founded the Zhuzi School of philosophy there. The well-developed culture of Fujian Province produced many heroic people in history. These include Li Gang, Cai Xiang, Li Zhi, Zheng Chenggong, Lin Zexu, Lin Juemin, Lin Xiangqian, and others. Many contemporary revolutionaries, scientists, men of letters, artists, and architects are also from Fujian.

The entire province road railway track in use amounts to 86560 kilometers, the highway 1229 kilometers, the first-level road 353 kilometers, the second-level road 6524 kilometers, the road density is 71.3 kilometers/hundred square kilometers.
The Fujian province has many large-scale airports , for example, the Sanming Airport, the Xiamen Airport, the Quanzhou Jinjiang Airport, the Fuzhou Changle international airport and so o­n.
The urban trasportation of Fujian is very convient beside several small city. You can go anywhere you want by public bus, taxi and other traffic tools. The basic charge of taxi is 4.5 yuan within 2 kilometers, and the exceeding is 1.2 yuan per kilometers. The fares of public bus differ accordint to different bus line, without air-conditioning the lowest price is o­ne yuan, and two yuan is the minimum with air-conditioning.

Fujian Festivals

Qingming festival :It is o­ne of the 24 seasonal division points in China, falling o­n April 4-6 each year. The Qingming festival is a festival of commemoriation . this is the most important day of sacrifice . Both the Han and minority ethnic groups at this time offer sacrifices to their ancestors and sweep the tombs of the diseased.
Chongyang festival: The 9th day of the 9th lunar month is the traditional Chongyang festival. It usually falls in October in the Gregorian calendar.Enjoying the flourishing chrysanthemum becomes a key activity o­n the festival. Also , people will drink chrysanthemum wine. Women used to stick such a flower into their hair or hang its branches o­n windows or doors to avoid evilness.
Double seventh festival: The Double Seventh Festival, o­n the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, is a traditional festival full of romance. It often goes into August in the Gregorian calendar.
This festival is in mid-summer when the weather is warm and the grass and trees reveal their luxurious greens. At night when the sky is dotted with stars, and people can see the Milky Way spanning from the north to the south. o­n each bank of it is a bright star, which see each other from afar. They are the Cowherd and Weaver Maid, and about them there is a beautiful love story passed down from generation to generation.
The Mid-Autumn Festival: it falls o­n the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, usually in October in Gregorian calendar.people will enjoy the full moon and eat moon cakes o­n that day.The moon looks extremely round, big and bright o­n the 15th day of each lunar month. People selected the August 15 to celebrate because it is a season when crops and fruits are all ripe and weather pleasant. o­n the Mid-Autumn Festival, all family members or friends meet outside, putting food o­n tables and looking up at the sky while talking about life. How splendid a moment it is!
The Spring Festival: it falls o­n the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often o­ne month later than the Gregorian calendar. The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees. People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat dinner together. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded, for in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively "ji", "yu" and "doufu," mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness. After the dinner, the whole family will sit together, chatting and watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival party broadcast o­n China Central Television Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad.
