Jiuhuashan Introduction

As one of the four great Buddhist mountains and the key landscape of China, Jiuhuashan locates in the southwest of Qingyang County, west of Anhui province with a total area of 120 square kilometers. With 99 mountains, 18 scenic spots, it had 150 temples with 3 to 4 thousand monks and nouns at its height of power and splendor. There are lots of mountains in Jiuhuashan and all of them are exquisite and elegant. It earns its great name not only by the advantaged beautiful environment, but also by the “poetry immortal” Libai and dignitary Jin Qiaojue. The original name of Jiuhuashan is Jiuzishan. When Libai visited it, he felt the nine mountains were like nine lotus obliged by heaven and then he composed a poem “Look Jiuhuashan from a Distance”, Praising it that “it is wonderful and has its own soul.” From then on, Jiuhuashan became famous all over China. Later, Korean dignitary JinQiaojue came to Jiuhuashan to cultivate himself according to the Buddhist doctrine. It is said that Dizang Boddhisattva was reincarnated in him. He helped those in difficulties and has boundless beneficences. “Thousands of people burned joss of sticks everyday.”
Jiuhuashan is not only famous for its Buddhist temples, but also for its many beautiful views. Within the 120 square kilometers’ boundary, there are grotesque mountains, strange rocks, springs, waterfalls and brooks. You can hear the beating of the drum and bell as well as the singing of the bird, and you can see the grotesque pines among the mist. It is very charming. Liu Yuxi, a poet in Tang Dynasty praised that: “It is shocking to see the great mountain.” Litterateur Wang Anshi in Song Dynasty wrote that: “This mountain is greater than thousands of other mountains in Chu and Yue.” Great mountains are all accompanied with beautiful waters. The water in the brook is crystal in Jiuhuashan. There are lots of springs, ponds, lakes and waterfalls such as Long Brook, Piao Brook, Shu Brook, Cao Brook, Lian Brook, Lan Brook and Jiuzi Brook. They all originate among the mountains of Jiuhuashan and appear among the trees. There are five waterfalls on Long Brook, they come down to the brook very quickly, and the splattered water is like snow and jade. The same is to Nong Zhu Pond. In addition, there are Bitaoyan Waterfall, Zhuo Ying Waterfall, Qibuquan Waterfall, Baizhangjian Waterfall, Baizhangtan Waterfall, etc. For the ponds, there are Yinyuan Pond, Qingyi Pond, Zhuoying Pond, Fulong Pond, Baizhang Pond, NianYu Pond. They are just “hidden in the mountain and were known to nobody, but once they are seen, they are not forgotten forever.”
Jiuhuashan is magnificent with its grand mountains, thick green coverage, waterfalls and springs. The temperature is mild there, and the four seasons are distinct. The Natural scenery and the Buddhist culture perfectly combine together. It is known as “the first mountain in the south east” and is always a place of interest. Two hundred million years ago, Jiuhuashan used to be sea, then it become land. After several geological movements and the action of the rain, Jiuhuashan took on today’s shape with its own distinct characteristics such as the steep mountains and grotesque rocks.

Jiuhuashan Festivals

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.
The Spring Festival falls o-n the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often o-ne month later than the Gregorian calendar. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people's sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new o-ne.
Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

The Festival of Lanterns takes place at the end of the Chinese New Year Celebration, o-n the fifteenth day of the first moon.  Lanterns have been part of Chinese life for centuries so it's not surprising to see a festival of lanterns.   People usually hang lanterns in the gardens, outside the houses, and o-n the boats.  These lanterns are signposts to guide guests and spirits of ancestors to the Lunar celebration.  After a sumptuous fifteen-day feast, these lanterns light the way for the spirits back to the world beyond.
Silk, paper and plastic lanterns vary in shape and size and are usually multi-colored. Some are in the shapes of butterflies, birds, flowers, and boats.  Other are shaped like dragon, fruit and animal symbols of that year.  The most popular type of lantern is the "horse-racing" o-ne, in which figures or animals rotate around the vertical axis of the lantern.
The special food for the Lantern Festival is Yuen Sin or Tong Yuen.  These are round dumplings made with sticky rice flour.  They can be filled and served as a sweet snack or made plain and cooked in a soup with vegetables, meat and dried shrimp.  The round shape of the dumpling is a symbol of wholeness, completeness and unity.
The Lantern Festival is an occasion for families to get together and for everyone--young, old, rich and poor to have fun.
