Liuzhou Introduction

Liuzhou is located in the north-central part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regionbordering o­n Guilin in the east. It shares a boundary with Hunan Province in the north and Guizhou Province in the has an area of 18,677 square kilometres and a population of 360000. Besides the Han nationality, there are ethnic groups of Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Tong, Maonan, Yi, Shui and others
Liuzhou belonged to Guilin Shire during the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), and it was not until the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-24AD) that the city that was to become Liuzhou came into being. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the name of this area was changed from Maping County to Liuzhou.
 Liuzhou has a typical karst landform with the clear Liuhe River flowing through the city. It is surrounded by mountains in the east, west and north. The terrain consists of river bends in the city center, karst plains in the northern part, isolated peaks and valleys in the south, and river terraces, karst basins and hills in the east. Liuzhou enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with moderate temperatures and abundant rainfall. The summers are long and hot, while the winters are short and not so cold. Visitors can enjoy a trip in Liuzhou in any season. Because it is often rainy, umbrellas and rain jackets are indispensable to visitors while traveling here.
Liuzhou has a large population of ethnic minorities, and there are many celebrations and festivals all the year round. Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County and Rongshui Miao Autonomous County are the most distinctive places to admire the customs of the ethnic minorities in Liuzhou.

Liuzhou Traffic

By air:
Liuzhou Bailian Airport is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of the city proper and has flights to Beijing, Haikou, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Chengdu. Airport buses can be found in Guotai Mansion departing about two hours before flight departure.

Liuzhou is the most important hinge of railway transportation in Guangxi, the major railway lines in the south of China, including Hunan-Guangxi, Guizhou-Guangxi, Jiaozuo-Liuzhou and Litang-Zhanjiang etc, join here; all trains from Guangdong and Guangxi to Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou and western Hunan pass here.
National Road 209, 322 and 323 all pass Liuzhou. At present, high speed buses from Liuzhou to Nanning and Guilin have been opened. There will be o­ne bus pulling out every 15 to 20 minutes from 7:00 to 22:00 everyday.

With many wharfs of water transportation, Liuzhou connects with cities like Wuzhou, Shanhai and Hong Kong etc. Among them, the passenger station wharf of Liuzhou harbor is its main passenger port, Phone:0772-3821794, 3836364.
Buses in Liuzhou are all of self-service ticketing. So, you need to prepare small charge or punch IC card of public transportation when getting o­n the bus. There are 2 kinds of prices, 1RMB and 1.5RMB; its operation time is from 6:00 to 22:30. Besides, there are also special line buses for tourist sightseeing and shopping, which arrive at the railway station, major tourist attractions and shopping places. They are green and double-decker buses, with the same ticket price as normal buses.
In Liuzhou, it is cheap and convenient to take taxi; the starting prices are as following: 3RMB within 1,000 m; 4RMB between 1,000 m and 1,499 m; 5RMB between 1,500 m and 1,999 m. Beyond 2,000 m, it costs 1.5RMB per 1,000 m, 0.3RMB in addition every 200 m; when the o­ne-way drive is over 7,000 m, it charges empty return fee, which is 50% of the price for the extra distance; from 23:00 to 5:00, it charges additional 20% of the price for the allowance of night-drive; during the waiting period, it is free within 10 minutes, beyond witch it costs 0.3RMB per minute; when going out of the urban area, passengers pay the charges for passing certain roads and bridges; drivers can not require those charges for empty return; passengers can refuse to pay when drivers do not charge according to the fee register or not give enough ticket.

Time: November.Liuzhou International Stone Festival is held o­nce a year. Fans in the circle of fantastic stone collection all agree that "Stones in Liuzhou Tops the World". The festival is now expected to win for Longcheng County the award of "Rocks in Longcheng top the World". The forth Liuzhou International Stone Festival will be held o­n November 2 , 2006, when a number of friends at home and abroad, colleagues and fans of stone collection will be invited here. The forth Liuzhou International Stone Festival will further consolidate the status of Liuzhou as " The Stone City of China", and help introduce the traditional Chinese culture to the rest of the world.
Ge xu Festival: March 3rd (lunar calendar) Folk Song Festival of Zhuang nationality. Each year during the festival a lot of stars, artists, guests at home and abroad, and people of Zhuang ethnic minority in beautiful costumes will gather here, singing and dancing to their heart content in the golden time.
