Longyan Introduction

Longyan is seated in western Fujian Province, bordered by Quanzhou and Sanming in east and north. It also neighbors Ganzhou of Jiangxi Province in the west and Meizhou of Guangdong Province in the south. Longyan has an area of 19028.3 square kilometres and a population of 2.85 million. The administrative division of longyan as follows: 1 district (Xinluo); 5 counties (Changting, Yongding, Shanghang, Wuping, Liancheng); 1 county-level city (Zhangping). Longyan is a hometown of oversea chinese in fujian province.
During the Jin Dynasty (265-420), Xinluo County was set up here, belonging to the territory of Jin'an Shire. The Tang Dynasty (618-907) established Tingzhou in this region which is the old name for Longyan
Longyan is a famous old revolutionary base area. There are 610 revolutional basic village points and 23,600 revolutionary martyrs which is half of the number of martyrs in fujian province. The people in longyan have made tremendous sacrifices and contributions to the victory of the China revolution.
Longyan belongs to the subteropical zone, enjoying an oceanic monsoon climate. Its weather is moderate all the year round. Without chilly winter and torrid summer, the annual average temperature falls between 18 and 20 degree centigrade (64 and 68 degree Fahrenheit).
The special local products in longyan are Chanting dried bean curd, Liancheng dried sweet potato, Zhangping dried bamboo shoot, Xinluo rice noodle and peanut, Wanying tea, Xuan paper (Chinese calligraphic paper), Shuixian Cha Bing (cake-shaped compressed tea), Yongding persimmon.
The nearby countryside in longyan is extremely beautiful, and punctuated by many thousands of tulou, a Hakka structure where a number of residences are built inside a single fortified compound. Most of these tulou are still in use, however the area has suffered an extreme population drain as the able-bodied have generally moved to Eastern Coastal cities as migrant workers, leaving behind a population of the very old and the very young. The villages also contain modern housing, and older houses that aren't tulou.
The best-known tourist attraction in the area are the earth houses, often round, of the Hakka people. Hakka means "guest"; they arrived in the area as refugees from one of Northern China's wars several hundred years ago and still have their own dialect and customs. These houses are quite large, holding an extended family, and built to be easily defended. There are none in the city itself, but there are thousands in villages to the West. Hotels can arrange a car or van to visit these places
The people in the area are friendly, tourist infrastructure is minimal, and there are no large tour buses - which makes for a very pleasant contrast with other touristed rural areas in Fujian .
