Quzhou is a state-level historical and cultural celebrated city, with a history of more than 1,800 years. In the 3rd year (A.D. 192) of Emperor Chu in the Eastern Han Dynasty, it was established as Xin’an County, and this was the first foundation of Quzhou city. Since the 3rd year (A.D. 559) of Emperor Chen in the Southern Dynasty, it was first controlled under the Xin’an County government system. In the 4th year (A.D. 621) of Emperor Wu of Tang Dynasty, Quzhou City was established. After that, Quzhou served as the capital of state, prefecture, county and district of different dynasties. After the liberation in 1949, Quzhou Prefecture Commissioner's Office was established, but abolished in 1955. In 1985, Quzhou was established as a Municipal City.

It was built as a copy of that in Chufoo of Shangdong province in the Song Dynasty (A.D.1128) by the Saint Conduanyou, the 48th descendant of Confucian, after they traveled down to southern China along with the Emperor and settled in Quzhou.

Ancient prefecture walls and traditional streets in the city of Quzhou are still well protected till today, and they are the only well protected ones of the eleven prefectures in Zhejiang province. The Lanke Mountain is the important birth place of the culture of Chinese Weiqi Chess.

Quzhou Festivals

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.
The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people's sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.
Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Dragon boat festival
Date: 5th day of the 5th lunar month
Place: Nationwide
Activities: Dragon Boat races and eating of tzungtzu (pyramid-shaped rice wrapped in reed or bamboo leaves).
Remarks: The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival has the longest history of any of the festivals celebrated in China. Dragon boat races are held to the sounds of thunderous drumbeats. Racing teams row vigorously, sprinting forward to reach the finish line.
In Chinese tradition, the dragon boats attempt to rescue the patriotic poet, Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned himself because his king would not take his advice. As a result, his kingdom was conquered. Chu Yuan drowned himself on the fifth day of the fifth month in 277 B.C. To save his body, people fed the fish cooked rice. They rowed boats and threw bamboo leaved filled with cooked rice into the water. Later, the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings became part of the festival.
