Shaanxi Introduction

Shaanxi, an inland province in China, is also called "Qin or “Shaan for short. It is o­ne of the places where Chinese culture originated. Beishan Mountain and the Qinling Range stand as two boundaries that divide the province into three natural areas -- the Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi, Guangzhong Plain, and the Qinba Hillyland. Plateau and hilly land make up most of the province's area. Shaanxi has a continental climate with distinctive four seasons. The months from March to November are the best tourist season. Shaanxi Province boasts an area of 205,600 square kilometers and a population of 36 million people. The city of Van is the capital.

Shaanxi Province has a time-honored history and a well-developed culture. It was the starting point of the Silk Road that extended from Asia to Europe and played an important role in cultural interflow between the East and West in ancient times. Beginning in the 11th century, Van served intermittently for more than 1,100 years as the capital of 1 3 feudal dynasties. The favorable geographical environment and long history have left Shaanxi with many unique places of historic interest and enchanting landscapes, cultural sites, and revolutionary sites. There are six cities of historic and cultural interest and 35,750 historical relic places, including more than 10,000 historic ruins, 4,300 tombs, 557 grottoes, and nearly 20,000 stone sculptures and ancient and modern buildings. The world-renowned Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.), and the terracotta warriors and horses were included by UNESCO in the List of World's Cultural Heritages.

It has advanced equipment, perfect runways, a 21,118 square meter waiting building and complete service system. It sets up a bridge in the air leading Xi'an to the world with more than 2.8 million annual passenger throughput and more than 5 million ton annual cargo throughput.

Railway Stations, Trains Specially for Travel
There are 6 passenger transport railway stations in Xi'an, and the Xi'an Railway Station is o­ne of the eight national top grade railway stations. It has station district coverage of 597 thousand square meters, 5 passenger platforms, and 24 rails. It actually provides 112 trains and its daily transportation of passengers is 80 thousand person times. In the Xi'an Railway Branch, there are excursion trains from Xi'an to Zhengzhou, from Xi'an to Lanzhou, and from Xi'an to Mount Hua.

Expressway
High class railways eastward, westward and northward with Xi'an as the center includes the Xilin Expressway (from Xi'an to Lintong), the Xibao Expressway (From Xi'an to Baoji), the Xitong Road (the first class road from Xi'an to Tongchuan), and the special expressway from Xi'an to the Xianyang Airport.

There are more than 10 thousand taxis in Xi'an City, enough to satisfy the requirements of the visitors at home and abroad in terms of the amount. The main models of the taxis are Santana made in Shanghai, Xiali made in Tianjin and Alto made in Xi'an. Taxis serve 24 hours a day, so the visitors can use it at any time. Shaanxi Festivals

In Shaanxi, an important birthplace of Chinese culture, window papercuts have a long history and are very popular. During Spring Festival every year, people in the central Shaanxi Plain that live in greyish white brick houses or cave dwellings will put bright red papertuts to the white paper o­n the window. The papercuts, with various designs, including human figure, birds, animals, fish insects flowers , plants, add cheerfulness to the atmosphere. In northern Shaanxi, the style of papercuts is simple, rough and bold, while in the central Shaanxi Plain the boldness and roughness are combined with exquisiteness and elegance.
