Shijiazhuang Introduction

Shijiazhuang has a population of 9,395,000. The area is 15,800 square kilometers (6100.4 square miles). Hebei's nondescript capital is one of the few places in China where the intention to rebuild everything from scratch in only 20 years is actually improving the city. Down-at-heel Shijiazhuang is an accident arising from the crossing of major north-south and east-west railway lines -- here X really does mark the spot. It's grown from village to provincial capital in 100 years.
Even that status is a hand-me-down from Tianjin, after the metropolis gained the right to report directly to Beijing rather than through the provincial government. As a result there's little of glamour here. But the city has a decent infrastructure for visitors and provides a base for exploring marvelous sights in the surrounding countryside, including Zhengding, about 15km (10 miles) northeast. It was an important town for centuries before anyone had heard of Shijiazhuang. Today it is still home to Longxing Si, one of the oldest, most atmospheric, and (luckily) least "restored" Chinese temples. Zhengding is also home to a number of pagodas so different from each other it's hard to believe they were produced by the same culture. Zhao Xian, 42km (26 miles) southeast, has an important example of religious revival in the large Zen (Chan) Buddhist temple, the Bailin Si. It also has the elegant Zhaozhou Qiao -- the first bridge of its kind in the world. Roughly 80km (50 miles) southwest, Cangyan Shan has the bridge-top temple featured in the closing scenes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Shijiazhuang Traffic

Transportation to Shijiazhuang has a special meaning for this is a city, which really rises owing to modern transportation. Before the early 1900s, Shijiazhuang was only a small, unknown village in north China. However, in 1902 and 1903, the finishing of Lu-Han Railway (Beijing-Hankou Railway today) and Zheng-Tai Railway (Shijiahzuang-Taiyaun Railway today) here started a new stage of Shijiazhuang. These two railways were no doubt an absolute advantage to its economic development since transport by road was rather backward at that time. Relying on the two railways, industry in Shijiazhuang grew quickly. Then, during the latter hundred years, the rapidly developing economy was responsible for promoting further development of the transportation infrastructure. Shijiazhuang has become the major transportation hub of China for it is the intersection of four main railways in China: Jing-Guang (Beijing-Guangzhou) Railway, Shi-Tai (Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan) Railway, Shi-De (Shijiazhuang-Dezhou) Railway, and Shuo-Huang (Shuozhou-Huanghua) Railway, which endows Shijiazhuang much convenience with its passenger transport. Almost since the mid-age of 20th century, Shijiazhuang has been the goods and capital distributing center of Shanxi and Hebei provinces. Transportation by road in this area then kept developing at high-speed to satisfy the requirement of trade. So far, 4 expressways, 4 national highways, 2 provincial highways, and 42 county highways forms a huge network in a total length of 6375 kilometers (3963.7 miles), which makes places in and around Shijiazhuang easily reachable.
Today, following the process of modernization, a modern airport has been built, which connects Shijiazhuang with over thirty major cities in China including Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. one more choice for transport is thus provided for your trip here.
