Tianjin Introduction

The formation of Tianjin has undergone a long period of time. The name of Tianjin, first emerged during the early period of Emperor Yongle of China's Ming Dynasty, means a ferry crossing where the Son of Heaven has passed. In the second year of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1404), Tianjin started building fortifications and defenses as a strategic military place. In 1860 Tianjin was turned into an open port. For years its industrial production and port trade volume were o­nly second to Shanghai, becoming the second largest commercial city in China and the biggest financial and trading center in north China. After the founding of the People's Republic of China Tianjin was turned into a municipality directly under the central authorities.

Tianjin has a variety of places to interest tourists. In the city itself is the the beautiful Haihe River area, Tianjin Broadcasting and Television Tower, the wellknown Ancient Cultural Street, Food Street, the Memorial Hall of Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao, the Memorial Hall of the Beiping (Beijing)-Tianjin Campaign, Tianjin Science and Technology Museum and the Museums of Nature, History, Art, Opera and Folk Customs. In Tanggu there is the Seaside Villa famous for its thermal springs and the world renowned Dagu Fort. In Jixian County there is the Huangya Pass of the Great Wall, a section famous for its wonderful scenery. Jixian County also contains the state tourist area of Panshan Mountain and Dule Monastery. In Xiqing District, o­n the city's outskirts, there is Shi house, the former home and tomb of Huo Yuanjia, the well-known patriot and first ancestor of martial arts.

Tianjin Airport
Tianjin Binhai International airport is located in the Zhangguizhuang, Dongli District, Tianjin, 13 km from the city proper. Tianjin Binhai International Airport is rated as o­ne of the State first-class aviation ports. It has a 4D-class runway, 3,200 meters long and 50 meters wide, and is able to accommodate various Boeing airplanes including 747-400 for landing and taking off. With the annual designed capacity of handling 90,000 airplanes landing or taking off. The waiting building has an annual handling capacity of 2 million passengers. Its parking apron covers 350,000 square meters and is able to accommodate 30 large and medium-sized airplanes. A parking area, covering 20,000 square meters, has been completed recently. The airport opens domestic air lines to Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dali, Dalian, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Guilin, Guiyang, Haikou, Harbin, Huangshan, Kunming, Nanjing, Ningbo, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shantou, Shenzhen, Simao, Taiyuan, Urumqi, Wenzhou, Wuhan, Xiamen, Xi'an, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna, Zhengzhou, Hong kong, Seoul of Republic of Korea, Nagoya and Osaka of Japan, Kiev of Ukraine and New Siberia of Russia.

Railway Station
Tianjin has four railway stations for passenger transport, the largest being Tianjin station. The station, located in the city center to the east side of Jiefang Bridge spanning over the Haihe River, handles both passenger and cargo transport. It can accommodate 10,000 passengers waiting for trains at the same time, handling 126 passenger trains and 62 cargo trains. There are many trains starting from Tianjin Station and via Tianjin, bounding to Beijing, Shijiazhuang, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Shanghai, Nanjing, Harbin, Hongkong, Kow loon and other 32 cities. Besides the Tianjin Station, there are the North, West and South stations. The North Station situated in Hebei District, links up the Beijing-Harbin and Beijing-Shanghai trunk railways. The West Station lies in the northern tip of the Jinpu Railway, Handling the passenger transport from Beijing to Shanghai. The South Station, located in the Hedong District, is a cargo transport station. The tourist trains include: Tianjin-Beijing, Tianjin-Chengde, Tianjin-Jixian and Tianjing-Tai'an lines.

Expressway
The Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway is a State key construction project. It starts in the west from the Southeast Fourth Ring Road, Beijing and goes eastward to the Hebei Road, Tanggu District of Tianjin. With a total length of 142.69 km, the section running through the territory of Tianjin is 100.85 km. There are 43 bridges and six butterfly-type overpasses spanning the Tianjin section of the expressway. There are six exits, that is, Yangcun Station, Yixingbu Station, Jinzhong Rd. Station, Tianjin Airport Station, Tianjin Tanggu Station, Tianjin Junlian gcheng Station (unopened). The expressway has four lanes and overpasses. Traffic entrance and exit are under control. The expressway has complete service facilities, and advanced monitoring system.


Tianjin Subway
Tianjin's subway was formally opened to traffic in 1984, and it stretches 7.4 km so far. There are eight stations along the line: xinhualu Station, Yingkoudao station, Anshandao Station, Haiguangsi Station, Erweilu Station, Xinanjiao Station, Xibeijiao Station and Xizhan station. It takes 12 minutes to run through the whole course. The business hours from 5:30 am-22:30 pm. Since form ally opening to the public, its daily average passenger transport capacity has reached 30,000, totaling 10 million a year. Tianjin is the second city following Beijing to open subways. The expansion project is under construction. It will extend from Xinhualu, via Xiaobailou, Tucheng and Fuxingmen, to Tianjin College of Finance and Economics, totaling 10.24 km.

Folklore Tour Week Marking the Birthday of Heavenly Empress
Every year, around the 23rd of the third lunar month, the folklore tour week is held at the Heavenly Empress Palace (Tianhou Palace) in the Ancient Culture Street to mark the birthday of Heavenly Empress (or called Mazu). o­n the occasion, solemn sacrificial rites are held in addition to the performances of dragon lanterns, liondancing, stilts and dry boats, attracting numerous tourists and pilgrims.

Tianjin Yuyang Golden Autumn Mountain Tour Festival
Located in the mountainous area in the northern of Tianjin, Jixian County, known as Yuyang in ancient times, has green mountains and clear rivers, with many historical sites. From the late September to early October, when the late autumn tourist season comes, the Yuyang Golden Autumn Mountain Tour Festival will be held here for o­ne week. By the time, domestic and foreign tourists can join grand open-air gala celebrations held o­n the Huangyaguan Pass of the Great Wall, or participate in the competition of mounting the Great Wall. In the scenic Panshan Mountain, there are mountain-or rock-climbing competitions, and high-altitude stunt and folk theatrics performances.
