Xiamen Introduction

Located at the southeast coast of China, Xiamen is a tourist city of Fujian Province famous for its attractive seascape. As o­ne of the major seaports since ancient times, Xiamen boasts a wide gulf with deep water but without freezing and silting. The name of 'Xiamen' was consequently given, which means 'a gate of China'. As o­ne of the forerunners of the special economic zones of China, Xiamen mainly consisting of  Xiamen  Island, Gulangyu Island, the north bank area of the Jiulong River and Tong'an County, is connected with the mainland by the Gaoji Seawall, Xiamen Bridge, etc. Xiamen has been called the Egret Island because of the hundreds of thousands of egrets inhabiting there. This is due to the beautiful natural scenery, the fresh air and the clean environment of the city.
Being of a subtropical monsoon climate with mild weather all year round expect the typhoon months, Xiamen is an ideal tourist destination for you. It is a typical littoral city with abundant tourist attractions such as islands, mountains, temples and parks, etc., providing you with a full sightseeing schedule. The well-known Gulangyu Island, Nanputuo Temple and other tourist areas like Jimei, Wanshiyan, etc. are highly recommended. Located in the southwest of Xiamen City, Gulangyu Island can be accessed by ferryboat from Xiamen in about 5 minutes. This island also known as "Garden o­n the Sea" because its area covered by verdant trees and plants. Its name "Gulang" which means "drum waves" came from a sound generated by the ocean waves hitting the coastal rocks. Sunlight Rock in the southern part of the island, is the highest place in the island, where travelers can see bird's eye view of Xiamen City. Located o­n the seashore south of Sunlight Rock, there are Shuzhuang Park which were built in 1913. Originally designated as a private villa, this wonderful scenery later opened as public visitor. Its excellent layout include arrangement of rock, pavilion, and caves led this amazing sea garden as symbol of Gulangyu Island.

By air
Located in the northeast Xiamen Island and 12 kilometers to the downtown, Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport boasts National Class B Trunk Line Airport. There have been 53 airlines of domestic service in existence and over 70 airlines reaching major ports of the world.
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is located o­n the northeastern tip of Xiamen Island, 10 kilometers away from Downtown Xiamen. It is o­nly half-hour’s drive from the major harbor zones of Dongdu, Haicang etc. Tickets for the airport bus are priced at six Yuan /person. Go westward for 50-100 meters to exit the lobby of the airport terminal,then go eastward for 200-250 meters to arrive at the airport bus stop. Xiamen boasts direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok, Penang, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Manila. There are also international connections via Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong which provide non lay-over access to Xiamen. 
By sea
As a key natural deepwater harbor at the southeast coast of China, Xiamen Harbor enjoys superior natural conditions. With islands of small and great Kinmen forming a natural barrier shield outside, it is wide, deep and ice-free with little silt. It has a total coastline of 154 kilometers long, 31.6 kilometers of which are suitable for ports construction. There is an anchorage area of 18.99 square kilometers,and a planning anchorage area of 52 square kilometers. The entrance channel is 40.3 kilometers long and 14 meters deep,and ships of 100-thousand tonnage can be anchored at the inner port. 
By train:
While Xiamen can be reached from many destinations by express train, typical rides can be rather long: Beijing- 35 hrs; Shanghai - 28 hrs; Xi’An - 40 hrs; Chongqing - 43 hrs; Nanjing - 31 hrs; Guangzhou - 15 hrs, etc. The experience can be relaxing and refreshing in a soft sleeper though.  Xiamen’s o­nly train station is situated at the intersection of Hubin Dongluand Xiahe Lu. The station, built in 1993, is already starting to show its age. It is easy to get to and from the station by public bus or taxi. Conveniently, the station is also the site of o­ne of Xiamen’s major public bus terminals. The terminus of all of the following bus routes is at the train station:  1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 13, 17, 21, 26, 28, 33, 37, 38, 42, 43, 46, 48, 49, 72, 80, 83 and 88. Numerous other buses also pass by the station.
By long-distance bus:Traveling by long distance bus to and from Xiamen is quite simple. However, it is wise to have your destination written in Chinese if your Chinese pronunciation is poor. Tickets can be purchased at the bus stations, at travel agencies, or your hotel may also be able to assist you. As a rule, buses are quite cheap, but prices may be higher for buses with air conditioning or luxury coaches.  Prices run the gamut depending o­n the distance of your destination.  There are direct buses to most destinations in Fujian Province such as Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Longyan, etc. There are also direct buses to cities in other provinces such as, Guangzhou,shengzhen, Hongkong, Guilin, Nanning, Suzhou and Shanhai

By taxi:
Taxis are a very convenient and inexpensive way to get around Xiamen.  Taxis cost 8 RMB for the first 8 kilometers, and 2 RMB for each kilometer thereafter.  While there are numerous taxis in the city, it can sometimes be quite difficult to find a vacant o­ne during rush hours. Most taxi drivers do not understand English. Therefore, if your Chinese isn’t up to the task, it is best to have the intended address written out in Chinese characters (business cards are great for this purpose).   Another, albeit slightly less convenient, option is to have someone you can phone who will be able to give instructions to the driver in Chinese.  Within the city the taxi fare should usually not exceed 30 RMB unless you are traveling off the island or going for a long trip along the ring road.  Make sure that the taxi driver turns o­n the meter (located o­n the front dash board)!
By public bus:
Xiamen, being a small city by Chinese standards, is relatively easy to move around by public bus. There is usually a minimal waiting time as well.  Easily read Bus Maps are sold at many tourist locations, book stores and post offices.  Within the city limits the fare is 1 RMB, but if the bus is air conditioned, the fare rises to 2 RMB. Regardless, riding the bus is a most affordable means of transportation.  Major Public Bus terminals within the city are located at the Train Station (火车站) and the Ferry Terminal (轮渡).  If you do get lost, just ride a bus to o­ne of these terminals to get your bearings again.  If possible, avoid traveling o­n the bus during rush hours unless you want to become intimate with many people.  Buses run from 6 AM to 11 PM.

 By Ferry Terminal (Lundu)
Ferry Transportation: There is no fee for the 10 minute ferry ride to Gulanyu Island but there is an 8 RMB charge to return to the mainland. o­nce you are o­n the Island you can take electrically motorized tour cars around the Island or take a relaxing walk as there are no other vehicles allowed – not even bicycles.

Xiamen Festivals

Shangyuan festival: Lunar Junary 13 to 17, it is also called Lantern Festival. This is the birthday of Ziwei King.

Dragon boat festival: The Dragon Boat Festival, the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, has had a history of more than 2,000 years. It is usually in June in the Gregorian calendar. Zongzi is an essential food of the Dragon Boat Festival.

Mooncake Game During Mid-autumn Festival 
Besides enjoying the bright silver moon and eating moon cakes that are popular throughout the country,there is a mooncake game during mid-autumn festival in Xiamen Region. 
There are 63 moon cakes for each set, which implies that 7 times 9 is 63,for three and nine are lucky numbers in the civil society of China. For each set, there are o­ne piece of Zhuang Yuan (Number o­ne Scholar) mooncake with a diameter of 5 inches,two pieces of Duitang (this and all following names are of official titles of the feudal governments of ancient China, just like Number o­ne Scholar) with a diameter of around 4 inches, three pieces of Sanhong with a diameter of two to three inches, eight pieces of Sijin with a diameter of a bit more than o­ne inch, sixteen pieces of Erju with a diameter of nearly o­ne inch, and thirty two pieces of Yixiu with a diameter of about half inch. They are respectively o­n behalf of the Number o­ne Scholar of polite letters and that of Martial Arts, Bang Yan (the second name at the highest imperial exam), Tan Hua(the third named o­n the finals), Jin Shi(a name for who passed the highest imperial exam), Ju Ren(the title for that passed the imperial exam at the provincial level), and Xiu CAI(the title for who passed the imperial exam at the county level). With o­nly six dice and o­ne bowl, the means of mooncake games are very simple. Everybody takes turns to throw dice to see which kind of cakes they can get. He who throws six same dice will bag every moon cake o­n the table.
Xiamen international Marathon: It is held o­n the first Saturday afternoon of January in each year. It is held by the Chinese Athletic Assoiation and the Xiamen people government. This is the o­nly Marathon held in spring and around the coastal.
Phoenix flower tourism festival: it is in the blossom of phoenix flower(May and June). The festival is named by the city tree of Xiamen, it is filled with local cultural characteristics and youthful vitality.
Shopping carnival: it begins in August each year. It is called “the shooping feast in off-season”
Flower car parade: it is during the October National day. The theme of the parade is to share the passion and joy.
Marine culture tourism festival: it is during the October National day, held o­nce every tow years. There are more than 40 programs o­n the festival,based o­n water and beach, such as “passion drift”,”delicious seafood ”and so o­n.
