Xian Introduction

The city of Xi'an (population 6 million) was the first Chinese city to open up its doors to the Ancient world, not in 1980 under the "Open Door" policy, but in fact during the Tang dynasty when Xi'an blossomed as the first stop o­n the Silk Road. Over a period of more than 2000 years, Xi'an was the capital for eleven dynasties. Along with Rome and Constantinople, this city was a world leader in culture and trade and played a vital role in bridging the gap between east and west. Among the many dynasties Xi'an was capital to, Qin, the first empire of China, and Tang, the peak of China's ancient history, has left the city with the most abundant legacy. The Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty, an attached defending army to the first emperor of China, is regarded as "the eighth wonder of the world". The Tang Dynasty has endowed Xi'an even more relics, including the Tomb of Concubine Yang, Huaqing Pool and Dufu Memorial Temple all date back to that period.
Xi'an was the first stop of Indian Buddhism preached in China; The sophisticated system of philosophy first coming to Xi'an 2000 years ago and later being developed into the dominant religion here. The Famen Temple in Xi'an is the o­nly temple in mainland China to have true relics of Buddha Sykyamuni.

Located in the geographical centre of China, Xi’an is regarded as an important communications hub for the western and the eastern part of China. The city has already developed a modern transportation network incorporating road, rail, and air travel.

Airline
Xian’s airport is located 50km northwest of downtown Xi’an in Xianyang, a neighboring city. It ranked as the fourth most frequented airport in China. Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is home to 68 domestic daily flights from almost every major Chinese destination. From Jiuzhaigou, Ningbo, Zhengzhou and Lianyungang, etc to Xi’an are newly opened domestic routes. International airlines from from Japan, Korea, Malaysia,Singapore and Thailand totally 10 Asia cities are well established services of XIY.

Railway
With a reputation as “the Greatway to the west”, Xi’an Railway Station is o­ne of the most pivotal terminals of the domestic railway system. It is the key junction between the southwest and the northwest, and forms a connecting link between the east and the west of China. The station lies in the north urban area, so it will take you about half an hour by car from the downtown area. Buses traveling to the railway station can be found o­n every main street, and will o­nly cost you 1 to 2 RMB. If you choose to travel by taxi, the fare should be less than 10 RMB(from the city center), the basic charge of Santana is 6 RMB, and the other is 5 RMB.

Chang'an Annual lnternational Calligraphy Meeting

Activities: Changan (Xian) is a place from which many well-known calligraphists have come in great numbers and a place that has the most calligraphic masterpieces. It has the deserved reputation as the home of calligraphy. The Chang'an International Calligraphy Meeting was first held in 1986 and attracted many famous calligraphists from both home and abroad. Now it has become a grand annual event in which the calligraphists interchange their writing skills and make friends. During the meeting, all kinds of ceremonies, calligraphy exhibitions of the famous calligraphists and the outstanding four treasures (writing brush, ink, ink stone and paper) of the study show are displayed. Visitors can also visit the Forest of Stone Steles Museum and several other places of note.
